What is a SMALLSWORD?

By the early seventeenth century, the rapier—long, slender, and designed primarily for the thrust—had become the preferred weapon of the gentleman. As civilian fencing evolved and techniques grew more precise, the rapier itself was transformed. By around 1700, it had given rise to a lighter, more compact weapon: the smallsword.

Elegant and highly specialized, the smallsword became an essential element of a gentleman’s attire throughout the eighteenth century. Far more than a tool of self-defense, it was a statement of refinement, taste, and social standing. This tradition endured until swords gradually disappeared from civilian life toward the century’s end, as pistols replaced blades in personal duels.

Smallsword hilts were most commonly crafted from silver or steel, though many were adorned with exceptionally fine materials such as gold, porcelain, and enamel. At their finest, smallswords represent the harmonious union of swordsmith, cutler, and jeweler—resulting in weapons that were not only functional, but true wearable works of art.
